Sleep Attack

Question
Hello Karel

I've been living with my boyfriend who is 21 for about a year now, and we share a bed. Last night, at around 5 a.m. I heard him talking in his sleep. no words, just sounds, gibberish if you will. He does this sometimes when he has nightmares. being conserned for him, I turned towards him and said his name to try and console him. He suddenly grabbed my wrists very tightly and began shaking me violently. the was yelling very loudly, as tho angry at something, in choppy barks. his body then began to convulse, I was under the impression he was havign a seizure, but then he suddenly snapped out of it, wide awake ad was his normal self, and concerned for my well being. Is this any specific kind of sleeping disorder, what causes it, and is it curable?

thank you kindly,

Audrey

Answer
Yes this could be narcolepsy and its symptoms, sleep paralysis and hypnangogic hallucinations however one does not convulse,  He needs to go to a neurologist like yesterday to get an mri and eeg to rule out epilepsy first, if all checks out he should get referrred to a sleep center for a diagnosis of narcolepsy.  If you go to sleepnet.com click on disorders narcolepsy to read about its symptoms as well as narcolepsy network.org. feel free to email again, but he needs to see a neurologist, your local hospital can refer you.karel
