Sleep problems

Question
Hello Karel,I am Abhishek from India.I am a film editor by profession and have a pretty tight schedule.Every night i sleep at 2:30 am and wake up at 11:30 am in the morning.I've been sleeping so late since an year and i've somewhere felt that day by day i'm getting much fatigued and losing my temper. It never used to happen before when i used to sleep early. But i take around 9 hours of sleep every day.So is it the late time of sleep causing it?are the sleeping habbits related to the mental behaviour?Plz give some suggestions.

Regards

Abhishek

Answer
While you are getting 8 hours sleep apparently your body is not used to the change in the hours you sleep.  Going to bed at 2:30 is really late when the normal individual gets to bed by ll or 12 and awakens at 8 or 9.     You might want to try to switch back to the normal sleeping hours however if this persists losing ones temper and being sleepy during the day usually that happens when one is overtired which I think though Im not a doctor is what is happening to you.   You should try to stay away 3 hours before bedtime from exercise , tea, coffee, caffeine, caramel colored soda like coke, pepsi, ginger ale, and chocolate all these can make you unable to get a good nights sleep. 30 minutes before bedtime try a hot bath to relax you and l5 minutes try a glass of warm milk, Milk when heated contains tryptophan a natural amino acid sleep inducer.  It also can relieve your stress.  There is one sleep disorder that effects daytime wakefulness which is narcolepsy, which I dont think this is what you have.but go to sleepnet.com click on disorders narcolepsy to read about its symptoms , if this persists you may consider getting your sleep monitored overnight at a sleep center. Your local hospital can refer you, but for now try getting back to a normal time to get to bed.  feel free to email again karel
