Child's Morning Sleep Seizures

Question
My son is 8. When he was about 5 my wife noticed that he would have seizure-type episodes in the morning before waking up, once every few months. He sounds like he's coughing or gagging and his body stiffens up. It probably lasts a minute. It's ONLY during morning sleep that we have notice it. Never when awake.

He had one this morning, the first episode in about a year.  Then he slept much harder than normal, waking up an hour or more after his usual wake-up time. He said he had a headache, then within a couple hours he said he felt very nauseous. He took a nap for 30 minutes at 11am and woke up feeling fine.

We took him to a neurologist a couple years ago.  They hooked him up to an EEG and said there was no evidence of seizures. But he wasn't HAVING ONE at the time!

Does the headache & nausea sound like something that would follow a seizure?  Are there things we could do to prevent this from happening?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Jimmy

Answer
You need to have another neurologist check him out.  The quicker you get a brain wave test after the seizure started the quicker it picks up.  You should consider getting one while he sleeps overnight to see if it shows there.  Nausea and headache I have been told are very common after a seizure, You need to go to another doctor neurologist, possible a pediatric neurologist, ask your pediatrician if a sleep center would be better.  But you need to get to the bottom of this, he would need anti seizure meds.Good thing is usually when it happens so infrequent , children outgrow them. feel free to email again.  I also suggest you google pediatric seizures.  Massachusettes general hospital has a good website and I believe you can also ask questions. feel free to email again karel. try this website and call them.http://www.childbrain.com/seizures.shtml.  If you get noweher let me know where you live and i will try and research some.
