sleep disorder

Question
When I am in my initial sleep phase, whether it is taking a nap,or at bedtime,I get a violent jolt in my sternum area. This has been going on for 10 years. It happens every time I try to go to sleep.I have take ambien for the last 8 years just so i can sleep. It is the only med. besides lunesta I feel comfortable with.My guess is that it relaxes me so I don't get that jolt.

I do have many ailments which I take medications for. I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depession, insomnia, hypertension, high cholt.,and trigl. I'm currently taking ambien, toprol, lipitor, tricor, and niaspan, and occasionally a xanax when needed. I am only 47,and overweight. 6-0 tall, and 265 pds.My question is have you ever heard of these symptons, and what can I do to correct this.My doctors have no clue.yes, losing weight would be great, but these violent jolts I get are something that friends, doctors, and family have never heard of. possibly a reaction to one or more of the meds. I am taking?

Answer
The jolts could be from the ambien and or a mixture of other meds.  However if these jolts are continuous and not just one then it could be a motor seizure.  You might want to discus this with a sleep center.Your local hospital can refer you. go to sleepnet.com you can post questions to their forum as well as talkaboutsleep.com they have online radio shows where you can ask doctors questions. feel free to email again karel
