Question
Hi, I'm having quite a problem. I don't know if you would call this a disorder but i cant sleep with someone around. as in, in the same house/building. I'm 20 years old, still live with my parents, have for the past 20 years, and i still have trouble sleeping with them around. even though i lock my doors and my windows are painted black. The times coming that I'm going to need to move out, but i have no one to live with that i can sleep around. I've tried before to sleep over at a friends house but i just lay there in the dark all night waiting for the sun to come up. no matter how tired i get i just cant sleep. what can i do to alleviate this paranoia? this isn't new. its been like this for as long as i can remember.

Answer
Unless you sound proof your room you could try some of these tips its probably just anxiety and really you are not alone , its very hard to sleep when others are in another room making noise or if you have to sleep over a friends house its not your own but in your situation you cant even sleep there. You might try sleeping with mellow music while you doze off something that relaxes you, perhaps that will soothe you to sleep,or you may have to get your own place but then you might have anxiety sleeping alone. try the radio and try some of these tips below it also could be the drinks or foods you are having 3 hours before sleep that may interfere. see below, feel free to email again happy holidays, karelTry these tips religiously for about 6-8 weeks but many have seen results
in as little as 2 weeks.lYou must go to bed and awaken the same time each day regardless
of how little or how much sleep you got the night before.
This starts to reset your sleep clock.
3 hours before bedtime stay away from
tea, coffee, caffeine, caramel colored soda like, coke, pepsi, ginger ale,
or root beer, chocolate and exercise .All these make for restless sleep.Do the following religiously for 4-6 weeks although some have seen changes in as little as 2 weeks.
Make sure room is quiet and dark. When you go to bed if you start to
twist and turn or if you wake up in the middle of the night and cant
go back to sleep, twist and turn for only 20 minutes, then get up, go
into a different room and read a book or magazine only! No computer!
When you start to doze immediately go back into the bedroom. This retrains
the brain into thinking that the bedroom is for restful sleep only. Do
this as many times as you awaken thru the night, it will lesson.
30 minutes before bedtime take a hot bath and immerse hands under the
water.Latest research states that the palms of the hand when immersed
in hot water send signals to the brain to relax. 15 minutes before bedtime\
drink a glass of warm milk. Milk when heated contains tryptophan, a natural
amino acid sleep inducer should do the trick. If this fails you should consider seeing a sleep center.
