Question
My 21 yr old daughter is home from college. She has allergies, this may be the problem. But, have you heard of anyone sleeping 15 hours and still sleepy. Her longest aw over 24 hours. This happens sporadically. Any info you can send would be great.

Answer
First of all unless your daughter is on other medications,or perhaps, drinks alcohol, sometimes sleeping long is not a problem, however,Narcolepsy is the uncontrollable urge to fall asleep which is what I have, the person falls asleep at inappropriate times, driving, reaing a book, etc.no matter how much sleep they get they are always exhausted. After you have exhausted, all other medical problems, perhaps a low thryroid,or anemia, get blood test done by your physician, and the problem still persists,i suggest you contact a sleep center for a consultation. Also if you notice she seems to lose muscle tone during laughing, or telling a joke, any emotion where you find her sort of dropping or going limp for a second this is definitely a sign of a sleep disorder, but first I suggest you rule out any anemia or thyroid trouble as this is the first thing,to look for, then if the problem persists or get worse ask your physician for a sleep specialist, also perhaps her allergy medication is too strong, that may be a possiblity as allergy medication will and can make a person sleepy and sometimes in younger people the dosage might be too strong.I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions, good luck, karel
